I wonder if you can help me.

I am looking for a decent free program that will allow me to make JPEG's
transparent.

Does anyone know of such a program that I can download for free?

I appreciate any help or information given.

Thanks!

That is a very simpel one:

This does not exist. JPG photo's can not be transparent

Gifs can be transparant (But only allow for 256 distinct colors)
PNG files kan be transparent (Unless you view them with inetente explorer.
Even IE6 does not support PNG Transparancy)

To convert JPG to GIF or PNG files, and to edit the transparancy, I recomand
PhotoFiltre (http://www.photofiltre.com)

You could also use Irfanview (http://www.irfancview.com) to convert
Or the gimp (http://www.gimp.org)

What is transparent? What would you use it for?
L.D.

What is transparent?

Whichever parts of the image you want to be transparent. E.g, you
could make an image of a doughnut, with the doughnut hole transparent
rather than filled in with some color.
What would you use it for?

It's very useful if you want the same image to used with different
backgrounds, for example on a website.

you can make jpegs transparent. I work for a magazine and I do it all the
time with photoshop. Unfortunatly, I don't think there is a freeware
program for this.

By nature, JPEGs cannot be transparent.

JPG just cannot be transparent, because the definition of the format does
not allow for it.

Sure you don't mean using layers to create a whole new JPG?
If so, it is adobe Photoshop/paintshop pro format. The endresult, saved as
jpg will still not have any transparancy. But I would love you to proof me
wrong...

Or maybe you use PNG? It is kind of JPG on steroids, so there can be the
confusion

an third option wil be your dtp program supports a kind of transparancy for
certain colors. IIRC there are a few commercial DTP programs that can handle
this. But then, The JPG on its own is still not transparant.

Gee, I don't know how come, but I do make them transparent. I must admit
that I do usually use Tif format, let me go to work tomorrow and try a
jpeg and I will get back to you. I am almost certain I have done this
quite a lot. I supose I could be wrong though, I usually am. Ha.ha. Get
back at you tomorrow.

Well, you *do* make me curious.

I would think Jasc Paintshop Pro and Adobe Photoshop would be able to do
this if it was possible at all...

I know they have transparency in their own properety format, but in JPG?

FYI, the newer .jp2 (jpeg 2000) offers transparency. But last I
checked Photoshop still didn't support the format at all.

I guess you've just given the solution:

It might be that Hedding uses JP2 files.

Unfortunately, the transparancy is not supported by MicroSuck Exploder 6
afaik
There are also not too many programs that will support Jpeg 2000, or maybe
only by plug-in (Like photofiltre does)

I don't thing jp2 is likely to overtake the already widely-supported
png, though I could be wrong. FWIW, here's a bit of explanation about
why old jpg don't have transparency.

My boss confirmed it. We use ps 7.0 first I use the background eraser on
the part I want to be transparent, select help, export transparency, and
give it a name. done. This is completely off topic so I supose we should
end this thread. Sorry guys!
