Jpeg size and download time

I have used Jasc photoshop 9 to resize all my images to 360X270 pix and they
average at about 50kb per picture. I have some pages that have up to 30
photos on in the form of a photogallery. On the reports page it tells me
that they have a download time of almost 400 seconds - I think people might
fall asleep waiting for it download. I am using Frontpage 2003 - should I
change the quality setting on all the Jpegs and if what is the optimum
quality setting for jpegs of this dimension. Also I have read many questions
here where people are told to do all this work on a different editing
programme - does this include changing the quality setting? If I change the
quality will it drastically alter the download time - because the pages
obviously need it!
thankls and sorry for the many questions - I have not published yet and if I
can't resolve this issue I am not sure if it is worth publishing!

that they have a download time of almost 400 seconds

With 30 images at 40K per image, that 1.2MB. The typical 56k connection can
download about 4K/sec. 1200K would actually be more like 800 seconds.

Make your images dimensionally smaller. Optimize them by reducing their
quality until they are unusable, and then back off one or two percent.
You'll find that you may be able to get by with 50% quality on some or all
of these images.

And remember, the target weight for a complete page is 40-45K. That's a
little scare in light of your described page.

What about using a gallery that shows thumbnails and the viewer can select
the picture that they want to see full size?

Hi,
yes, I didn't explain myself quite properly - I do have a photo gallery -
slide show - therefor only one picture is full sze - the others are
thiumbnails - the largest page size is about 35Kb - but it still comes up as
over 400 secs to load - will the quality setting help this?

will the quality setting help this?

Of course. The weight of all the enlarged images is added into the page
weight - remember.

400 seconds by FP calculations is more like 800 seconds in real-world time.
It's too heavy....

Hi again,
I am not doing very well on explaining myself - the whole page is about 35kb
with all the thumbnails on it.
Is the quality setting on Frontpage not good enough to use?
I have downloaded Jalbum as I have already read Eleanors travels but I am
not sure if it is 'Jacquie proof' although I haven't looked at it properly yet
thanks for all your help in the meantime, regards,

The documentation for JAlbum is really quite good. Print out the important
parts and then have fun trying out the various possibilities.
Again ... don't let FP influence anything about the quality of your photos!!
Eleanor

JAlbum is easy.

Yes...or rather NO don't let FP handle images other than creating a
gallery...FP is not an image editor.

IrFanview is an excellent (and free) program to resize, optimize singlely or
in batches. It's not really an full image editor but it's an amazing
program. It's in most designers toolbox I bet.

Actually, if the page references both the thumbs and the enlarged photos
then it's very much larger than 35K, since they are all fetched when the
page is downloaded....

Hi Eleanor,
please be patient with me but I am not an accomplished web designer although
I am designing a rather large web site in 7 different languages - so I am
learning as I go along. I am designing a Tourist website where there will be
a lot of photos- I have got to make it as simple as possible. People will go
from the wrtten description of a property to a photo page where they can see
it. hence on property has 9 apartmetns with each room photographed from each
apartment. Tha makes about 40 photos. I had resized the photos and cropped
them, lightened them etc in Jasc Photo Shop 9 then inserted them as a
photogallery slide show. Hence each apartment has a different slide show one
underneath the other with all the thumbnails above the photo selected. All
the photos main pictures are about 40-50kb - I don't klnow the size of the
thumnails - they are 100x75 pixels. I have understood from your tutorials
that I should reduce the file size of each photo and finally after much
fumbling about found out how to do this (I hav an Italian version and using
English instructions - not easy!) I
have compressed one photo to 23kb - will a page with 40 photos of this size
still be slow to download?
I will be so very greatful for your help!

A page that weighs in at 50K takes about 20 seconds to download.
Your page weighs more than 40x(23+2) K, that is a download time of approx.
400 seconds. (I am assuming each thumbnail is about 2K, but this may be
optimistic.

A different (non-slideshow) gallery will not load the large images until the
user clicks on them, so the download time (thumbnails only) will be around
25-45 seconds, much more reasonable.
