Whenever I try to save an image to my hard drive from a webpage, the jpg
format is not available, only the bmp. I followed the instructions in the
help file, but there are no changeable options under the properties of the
image to switch to jpg. Does anyone have any ideas?

Internet Properties > General tab:

Click the "Delete Files" button, select "Delete all offline content", OK, Apply > OK.

Reboot and test.

This problem occurs if the Temporary Internet Files are full.

1. Start Internet Explorer
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the General tab.
4. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files.
5. When you are prompted to delete all temporary Internet files, click OK.

Why IE will only let you save as BMP:

related to this, I would like to know why sometimes when I save a jpg
file IE saves it with '.jpe' extension instead of 'jpg'.... thank you..

My guess is that IE thinks that's a better format to use, however my reason
for chiming in is simply to suggest a very useful and well written image
manipulation program called Irfanview (www.irfanview.com) that allows you to
do lots of things with images VERY quickly. Sure you can use big art
packages, but Irfanview is QUICK. See the site for full details and be
careful when it asks about file associations, but I think if you let it do
all your image stuff you'll be pretty happy with it.

I had a similar problem where all JPG files insisted on being saved as JPEG.
This was a problem totally unrelated to the Temporary Internet Files folder
fix. I had found the problem mentioned in various newsgroups and websites,
but nobody had the answer. Until now. :-)

Turns out, as I suspected, that a registry key had been changed. The key in
question is:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg

There is an entry under this key called "extension". Its data is supposed to
read .JPG, but mine said JPEG. I changed it and the problem went away
forever.
