is there a program to get a still image from a movie file?

Hit Print Screen at the image you want. Open your paint/image software and
go to Edit>Paste or similar. Cut the image to the size you want and save as
a jpg.

Irfanview will do it, but it seems it wants to do the whole movie.

You can actually specify a frame range in the extract frames dialogue
box, but that's a difficult quess with a large movie.

It's easier (I think) with Virtualdub. Select the frame, hit CTRL+1 and
paste it into your graphics editor.

Incidentally, I've suggested adding a Capture This Frame option with Irfan
himself, and he liked the idea. Also, a way to get the current frame
number.

Sweet, more great features for an already awesome product.
