It's a simple enough request: I'm looking for a journal type program that would
allow me to take notes and file them by time and day/month/year/etc. I did a
bit of a search through this group on Google and found nothing very useful
(mostly broken links, in fact).

The main feature I'm concerned with is privacy (by way of password entry and
automatic encryption of files). Other things that would be nice but aren't
necessary are profiles (for keeping seperate projects and different persons
journals in) and a calendar to organize it all.

After doing my own search, I was actually thinking the best way to go about this
is to run weblog software off of a local apache server, but besides not having
encryption, it is obviously not very efficient.

If I hear anyone suggest Notepad/Vim/Emacs/Pico/(insert name of text editor/word
processor here), I'll have to break out a rather oversized mallet and show 'em
what for....

Have you considered Keynote? It will auto-name nodes by date. Seems you
might find a way to further enhance your Keynote data layout by doing some
node linking to various layouts, later on. Second, it has encryption (haven't
used it, but it's discussed in its helpfile).

Okay, I can't picture how Keynote could be melded into a view quite how you
might be drawing. Unless someone with a better imagination says differently.

Bjorn S. has tried to tease me into using Edlin. I hadn't quite got
his reference, thought he only meant it as one of those measures for
an "aesetic's discipline." Then recently I've learnt tha Edlin's was
specially made for those types who fancy hairshirts & self-flogging...
