Like Steve Bull, I have been plagued with countless
Windows Messenger "New Version...You must" pop-ups. I@ve
even tried installing them to make it go away but even
this doesn't work. I was pleased to see Steve's post &
Jonathan's reply. However, I've done both of the things
that Jonathan suggests (User Accounts & Norton)and I@m
STILL getting the damned things. I've also tried
following the advice that Jonathan posted in reply to
another post - ie. disabling Windows Messenger by
clicking on Tools, Options, Preferences & unchecking.
Jonathan, when I click on Preferences I DO NOT HAVE a box
that says "Run Windows Messenger...etc" or anything
remotely like it. I'm running XP Home.

I know you're only trying to help, but I need a real
solution to this major irritation. I don't really want
to risk the problems you list by removing it altogether,
but if you can't sugest anything that actually works I
might just have to.

I've had five emails from different people at Microsoft
Tech Support about this & NOT ONE OF THEM has suggested
anything that actually works.

I've got a bright idea: why doesn't Microsoft simply STOP
ANNOYING PEOPLE BY NOT SENDING THE POP-UP? Then maybe
Jonathan could expend his goodwill & expertise on more
worthwhile topics.

Greetings Mike,

Windows Messenger only displays this pop-up if you actually sign into the .NET Messenger
Service -- otherwise it doesn't appear. If you've removed the Passport.Net\* (Passport)
entry (as indicated in my post to Steve), Windows Messenger *can't* sign in without your
Passport credentials and as such, the pop-up will not appear. You may just need to reboot or
sign out of Windows XP and back in (although it shouldn't be required).

As well, you can totally disable the XP Passport saving features by downloading and running
this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/disablenetcreds.reg
(you *will* need to reboot for this change to take effect)

Finally, to restore that startup option (although as I said, Windows Messenger won't show
this popup if it's not signed in, regardless if it's actually running or not) you can
reinstall Windows Messenger from here:
