Jonathan actually this problem is on my friends computer
he is the only one out of 4 of us who does not get the
assignment of the ports like we do when you just sign in
with windows messenger for Xp. I tried the trick on my
computer & I lost the assignments also & could not get
them back. I did a system restore & then I got the port
assignments automatically when I just signed on. I did
notice that when you do the uninstall of the nework
device you do lose all the checks in your manual port
assignments for MSN and any others you may have.I was
able to get mine with restore but his is doing this to
long and the restore points are to far gone.So either I
would think it is something on your trail or some
corrupted file in messenger somewhere. What is you
opinion?

Hi Carmine,

Interesting -- have you actually checked that the ports
aren't being opened? I'm just asking

Greetings Carmine,

This is a Windows issue, not specifically a Messenger issue. I'm afraid I've run out of
ideas for the time being -- as a workaround, your friend will just need to turn off the
Internet Connection Firewall when using the video/voice conversation features of Messenger.

Hi Jonathan
I think you are right this is a windows issue I tried a
3rd party firewall also & we set it to allow messenger &
the server to pass & we had the same problem, with XP
firewall off it works fine with the 3rd party firewall
off it works fine also, soon as we try to use either we
can't connect to the other computer, we just can't get
them port assignments from microsoft to appear. I think
there is something missing in the reg or something when
this computer got the updated service pack upgrades
because it was working fine before that. I guess we will
just have to live with it because it is now over our head.

Thanks for trying Jonathan

Hi Carmine,

Which third-party firewall were you trying to use? The Internet Connection Firewall is the
only firewall which will [supposed] to open the ports automatically. If you and your contact
were trying ZoneAlarm, make sure that it's set into the 'Medium' setting before trying an
audio/video conversation.

Hopefully in the future I'll have a better answer for this.
