OK there's a twisted side to my nature. But I'm looking for some sort of
joke proggy that I can put onto a bootable floppy, and leave in the PCs of
one or two victims in my office, so that when they switch on on the morning
of our office party, it will do whatever sorts of wierd things as if they
had been virused. Anyone know of such things - I used to have one or two
some years ago, but they've gone missing.

Note - I will test any suggestions on an old machine at home first, to make
sure I'm not given a bum steer.

Cheers

Why not just add something like the following into the AUTOEXEC.BAT file?

============================================================
@echo off
cls
echo.
echo.
echo -------------------- Thanks for installing the WXYZ virus!

I'm just guessing, but that's probably a career limiting move. He'll have a
lot of time to think about next year's prank while flippin' burgers on his
next job.

The boot sequences are all set in the cmos to boot from the A drive first??

SWEET!!

DOS?

Much can be done with a boot floppy just by calling an executable from
the autoexec.bat file, or you could just script a custom joke right there.

You can search for computer pranks with just about any search
engine, but it would be safer to make your own (so that you know
what it does or doesn't do) ~ for instance, it would be a very bad
idea to write anything to the harddrive.

Actually, it's kind of an all around 'bad idea' to mess with someone
elses computer without permission. Most businesses have strict
rules about employees running foreign programs on the office
systems (I'm not too sure if those businesses, which allow the boot
sequence you have described, have enough clue about security
to have even thought of having rules in place).

@autoexec <---hint

....can even be a little unnerving (and is recursive "like a virus")

If I had rules in place, and you were my employee, and you did
what you propose ~ you would be severely reprimanded.

That doesn't mean that I haven't played some pranks myself though... ;O)

Just bcause its for Christmas and i dont usually post here just read cos of
the spam lately here are two nice ones! they are not viruses but ... well
try em out for yourself

The first one when you click on this itll give the the famous blue screen it
will give a few scares cos when they try to switch it of it gets worse! you
can reboot or do a ctrl alt del and close the page.

the second one wil start pop ups on the screen and will get faster and
faster cannot stop unless you do a ctrl alt del and stop it!

True, but I'm thinking any such "trick" making people think their systems
are infected with a virus in todays environment is liable to have the
same result. As tired as everyone is with having to deal with these
pests, the funny (ha-ha) value of simulating a virus will be likely to
fall flat, and with a resounding thud. <<smile>>

Thanks guys - no worries about my job - all victims carefully selected. I
think I'll go with the Autoexec.bat idea - leaving bootable floppies in the
selected machines, with messages to suit each person.

Since you're not worried about your job, just hope that all your victims
have a forgiving sense of humor. ;)

No worries. My plans are nothing compared to what some of them have done to
me at other times - it's a fun environment!
