I am not able to join workstations to a AD server which is
also a dns server. the error message I am getting is dns
name does not exist (error code= 0x00002328
RCODE_NAME_ERROR).
I ran addiag tool and pass all tests. my workstations are
using the server ip address as their dns. I am almost at
the end of a deadline and need to join these workstation
to this server.
Any sugestions will be greatly appreciated

Can you ping your DNS? Do you have IP installed at all?
If you type "ipconfig /all" at a command prompt (no quotes) what kind of
response do you get?

Is the DC using this DNS server and are the SRV records for this domain
created?

run dcdiag /fix /v and netdiag /fix /v on the DC and post the errors also,
please post an ipconfig /all with the domain name from ADU&C.

I would also make sure that any external DNS IP addresses are immediately
removed out of IP properties on the machine (and all machines on the
internal network, DCs and clients).

I am able to ping the server. I was able to joined one
computer. All my workstations are XP. This is what I see

everything seems to be configured properly. But I know I
am missin something. Let me know what you think.

After seting up Wins using my ad server's ip address, I
was able to join the computers. HOWEVER, when I went to
see if could add a network printer to the workstations,
the icon "Add a printer" is not there! I setup two network
printers, restarted the spooler service in both the
workstations and server, rebooted both and still can't see
the add a printer icon. Can anyone tell me where is this
icon stored in the system. Maybe I can run it from its
system location. Please help!

With W2k or XP clients being added, is normally a DNS query to the domain by
the recommended method of using the domain FQDN (such as "domain.com"). If
you added the workstation using the NetBIOS name, then I can see why using
WINS worked for you. My problem with this is that it's telling me you're
still having a DNS lookup issue. Tell me, do the SRV records exist under
your zone name in DNS?

Also, do you have any restricitions, such as a GPO preventing user accounts
from adding printers? Normally this ICON will just be there. Maybe another
symptom of a DNS issue.

If you can post an ipconfig /all so we can take a look at your config, that
may give us a starting point in diagnosing this.

Thanks for posting that information. It seems that these two machines are on
different subnets. The only thing I can think of, since at first glance, the
ipconfigs actually look good, is if there is a firewall or something else
blocking any sort of traffic?

both the server and my worksstations are in the same
subnet. I am sure this printer issue got to do with
permission. I just can't figure out where you restrict a
user from viewing the Add a printer icon. I can search for
it and find it, but when I double click on it a message
pops up about local restrictions in place contact your
systems administrator. Please if you have any other ideas
or thouths let me know.
Thanks

If the case is as simple as you're explaining it, then the obvious would be
to look at the printer properties/security tab and see what permissions are
in there. If they are allowing and if the Add Printer icon is missing, then
it would seem more likely to be a GPO restriction. I would start looking at
what GPOs are applying to your workstation. You can use a couple different
tools for this, such as gpresults.exe or Fazam 2000 (www.fullarmor.com) to
see the RSOP (resultant set of policies) to see what is applying. Not sure
what else to say at this point.

Sorry..
