Joining workgroup reset password

I have a laptop and desktop that I wanted to share files between, they
are both connected by a router, and I can "see" the desktop from the
laptop (when I do "find computer" it is able to find it).

On the desktop I joined a workgroup which I imaginatively named
"WORKGROUP" and bounced the machine, everything hunky dory.

Then I did the same on the laptop.

Now the laptop doesn't recognize my password.

I don't have a password floppy for the laptop. I am trying to avoid
reinstallling on it, I don't have any data that would be lost but it's
just a lot of work to get everything set back up the way it's supposed
to be.

I don't have the admin password for the laptop. It was set up by my
company and I would have to ship it to them to have them log in with
the administrator password. To be honest, I really just don't want to
look that stupid if I can avoid it.

Is there any solution for this outside of reinstalling?

Is it possible to add a user to WORKGROUP or something, from the
desktop, that I could then log in as?

Or am I up a creek.

Thanks for any help

Oh and just for the record, yes I'm a newbie at administrative stuff.

The instructions for joining a workgroup seemed very straightforward
so I didn't think I was going out of my echelon ...

Just remember that the road of abnormality is
neither the path of the less beaten nor the
road not naked; and that you can lead a whore
to Slack, but you cannot make a silkier knout
from a fig giver. Or kill me.

joining the workgroup was not your problem. leaving your company domain
that was set up is a problem. your account is tied to that domain. you can
try logging in by putting your old domain name in front of your old user
name like "domain/user" (or is it "domain\user", i can't keep those
slashes straight) and your old password. that should get you logged in
until you can get the it people to put you back on the domain properly.
