Hello
What is the cheapest way to connect a WinxpPRO to a Win98SE
so that both can use the same broadband ISP?
Thanks

That depends on your current equipment. How does your modem connect to
your PC, USB or ethernet? If ethernet, a low-cost router with built-in
switch, another NIC for the second PC (if it has none), and cables can
be had for Us $60 or less. If USB, you need NICs in both PCs, a
crossover cable, and instructions to enable ICS, preferably in the WinXP
unit, with it connected to the ISP.

Or, if using ethernet for the cable modem, have two NIC's in that PC and use
crossover cable to connect to the NIC in the second PC. This is the method I
use and it works a treat. You could buy the NIC's and cable seperately, but
it can be cheaper to buy a networking kit - I paid £25 for a kit with two
cards and 10metres CAT5 crossover cable.

True, that would be cheaper, but if the sharing PC ever goes down, the
second PC loses internet connections. Plus, ICS can create its own
problems, depending on how one wants to use the 'net.

Can't say I've had any issues with ICS. The 'main' PC is on most of the
time, and using Wake-On-Lan even if it is off, it turns itself on if I try
to access the 'net from the second PC. I did make the mistake of having WOL
enabled on both PC's to start with, but that was crazy as they were forever
turning each other on to negotiate or summink and you could never get both
off! BTW I use S3 sleep mostly so the PC's boot in about 10 seconds.
