Joined user to domain, now can't logon to "this computer"

A laptop had been used at work, but not part of the domain. Just workgroup
name, with internet access.

Today I created a new user in AD, and joined the laptop. Of course, the
laptop now has the option at startup to logon to the domain or "this
computer." The former works fine, but now the laptop will not accept the
old logon.

Now, I cannot bet my life that what the user is telling me 100% correct, but
he swears emphatically that he is giving me the right username and password.
He's been using this computer for about a year, so I tend to believe him.

What might be going on, and what can I do?

Thank you,

jm

log on as a domain admin and reset is password on the local computer. Bet
you a beer the username your user is giving you is wrong. Users never type
their username, it's always there for them. They always get the password
right, but here's the usual exchange:

admin: "Whats your username"?
user: "password".
admin: No, that's your password. What's your username?
user: huh?
admin: your USERNAME! The name in the top field in the logon box above where
you type your password.
user: Oh, um, well, gosh, I think it's just my name. Try John

you get the idea...
