You can't attach or append an existing domain to a forest tree. That would
violate the requirement that a schema must be consistent throughout the
forest, violates the hierarchy that constitutes a tree (a contiguous
namespace) and violates the concept of FSMO roles.
W2K only sees GUIDs, except for dns name resolution. While a human might
have the opportunity to see an fqdn of "child.parent.local", all the W2K OS
sees are a series of GUIDs. The same applies for the 5 FSMO roles, all of
which perform specific tasks in a domain or forest.
Hence the need to promote a member server in Parent to create a new Child
domain.
