and remove on my control panel......it has a folder under C:\ and all its
contents that is it when i click on play warcraft with the cd in it only
brings up a small black screen that goes down to task bar then a full black
screen that has dos and other things then that black screen goes off and it
goes back to the warcraft menu.....i know this is confuseing u i hope i
haven't messed up my computer i added the patch and direct x and i don't
know what else......i hope u can figure this out and also i have xp windows
and i don't have a Compatibility tab....i did the short cut to my desk top
and then properties but no Compatibility tab....then i did a search and it
said no results.....thanks Patsy

As far as I'm aware WarCraft 2 won't run properly on Windows XP - without
using DOSBox, those who could get it to run had serious issues with the game
running far too fast. I remember there was a huge outcry back in 2002 when
Blizzard said they had no plans to fix it under Windows XP.

If you need specific help with DOSBox (as I believe I read earlier in
another thread).

Basically once it's loaded up type:

mount c c:\warcraft 2 (it may be war2 instead of warcraft2 - but whatever
the folder is called).

then type dir and it will list the names of all the programs - one will end
in .EXE and will probably be war2 or warcraft 2.

Of course failing that WarCraft 3 is only about £10 these days, and that
definitely works on WIndows XP, in fact I feel like a game now. 8-)

Hi Paul Smith,

Thanks for stepping in and giving Patsy and I a hand. :-)
I checked on ebay and Amazon and WC3 is only a few dollars.

Hmmm, You don't seem to know that much about MS-DOS or computers from
your posts so you probably don't want to mess with getting your DOS
version of Warcraft 2 working on Windows XP or using DosBox.

I think the easiest "fix" is for you to get the Warcraft 2 Battle.NET
edition which is the Windows version of Warcraft 2. The only downside
to this version is that it doesn't have the CD Music of the DOS
version.....which for me is unforgiveable and which is why I play my
Warcraft 2 MP3's from the CD while I play the game.

Also Warcraft 3 is not a replacement for Warcraft 2....so the
suggestions to play Warcraft 2 are not good suggestions. For some
reason Warcraft 3 never interested me whereas Warcraft 2 is great.

Yup. DOSBox is just a Windows program.

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/dosbox/DOSBox0.63-win32-installer.exe?download

Download and install, and then when you go to run it, you're presented with
a command prompt (ala DOS).

To start off you need to mount the drives you need to use with it, so type
'mount c c:' this will mount your computers hard drive so DOSBox can see it.
Then it's a case of switching to the warcraft directory and running it (I
assume it's successfully installed).

Here's a video of me playing Simon. 8-)
http://www.windowsresource.net/videos/dosbox.wmv (1.3MB less then 20 seconds
on most broadband) which shows starting it up and running it.

I use the command 'mount d i:' because the game needs the CD, so I mount my
CD drive on this computer which is I:\ - and DOSBox see's it as being drive
d:\

If you've got any questions post away. 8-)

Oh I forgot to mention if DOSBox captures your mouse pointer for when you
want to close it - just press the Windows/Start button the keyboard to get
it back.

There probably is a normal way to get it back but I've only just installed
it to try it out <g>.
