Whenever I plug in a Transcend Jetflash USB 2.0 (128MB), I get the familiar
XP sound of a USB device recognition, but windows explorer freezes and so
does device manager. So, I can't use it. The funny thing is that the
specific Jetflash works with all my other computers (laptop and home) with
similar configuration (P4/512, winXP) and the USB ports work perfectly well
with any other peripheral (scanner, mouse, printer or whatever).
Has it ever happened to anyone?
Thanks
Vassilis

Do the USB devices you have, plug straight
into the device (from the back of the case) Vassilis?

If so, how many USB devices?

Do you use a powered USB Hub?

Because depending on how many USB devices you
do have plugged into the case (without a HUB),
some USB devices DO drain the power, if you
connect too many USB devices straight to USB
on the case.(and also, if the USB device you're using
isn't powered by mains power as well).

And that maybe one reason why it's not
working.

This also depends on how many watts your power supply is, for your computer.

Hi Paul
Thanks for replying. The answers are below...

The PC has 4 USB ports (2 onboard and 2 on a card). The devices usually plug
into the ports on the USB card. However, I switched them into the onboard
slots -plugging the flashcard into one of the ports on the card, but
still...

A printer and a scanner. The thing is that it DID work once (and for all)
the very first time I tried it.

Well yer but the previous post you're
referring to doesnt say if you're using a HUB
in the PC you're having probs with.

All it says, is the Jetflash works in other PC's

Well from what you've said.

1. Is SP1 for XP installed?

This should make USB 2 work properly.
(if the onboard USB ports are USB2).

2. Since you plugged the Flashjet into an onboard
USB port and it didnt go, the BIOS option for USB
isn't enabled? PCI USB cards are different from onboard USB. It wouldn't
matter, whether the USB
option in BIOS is enabled, or disabled, for PCI USB.
just as long as the driver/s for the card are installed.

BUT it would matter, for onboard USB.

If the USB option is BIOS is disabled, they wont work.

3. How many USB devices are plugged into a
USB port. Or ports, would depend on how
many watts your power supply is, in the case.

Also take into account the rest of the hardware, you
have installed in the case, (beside the card and the
onboard USB). ie: the hard drive, the video card,
extra hard drives, cd, dvd etc.

Are there any X !'s / unknown devices in Device
Manager relating to USB at all?

Hi again
Thanks for your patience
XP SP1 IS installed
All PCI and onboard USB ports DO work (I switched plugs and checked it).
The plugged-in devices are only a scanner and a printer. They keep working
no matter where I plug them in (onboard or PCI).
The jetflash won't work no matter where I plug it in (onboard or PCI).
The are NO unknown devices in the device manager. As a matter of fact, the
flashcard IS recognised as a removable hard disk, but as soon as I
right-click to get the properties, the device manager viewer freezes and so
does windows explorer. If there are other programs running they keep working
without any problems. When I UNPLUG the jetflash, the winlows explorer and
the device manager and everything else that might have been frozen, returns
to normal (you hear the familiar sound of a USB device getting unplugged).
Cheers
