Hello Everyone,
I'm sure many of you have discovered this for yourselves already, but I
wanted to make it official. The Jet 4.0 SP8 updates for Windows 2000,
Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server are now available in the Microsoft
Download Center, http://www.microsoft.com/downloads. We will be releasing
the SP8 updates for Windows 9x, Windows NT and Windows Me in the upcoming
weeks. Eventually these updates will also be available in Windows Update
through the typical automatic detection, but for now you can find them by
doing the following:
1. Navigate to the download center at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads.
2. Select the appropriate operating system.
3. Search for "Jet SP8".
4. Click the link to open the download page for Jet 4.0 SP8 on your OS.
When you open the download page, you can select the appropriate language if
it is not automatically selected for you. The direct links to the download
pages for each operating system are:
Windows Server 2003:

Windows XP:

Windows 2000:

More information about obtaining the Jet 4.0 SP8 update is available in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base in the following article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];829558.
An Access friendly version of the Jet Sandbox Mode was introduced in Jet 4.0
SP7 and can be used to block unsafe expressions. Information about the
changes to the Jet 4.0 Sandbox Mode are described in the following article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;294698&Product=acc2003.
Access 2003 Specific Information
If you are using Access 2003 and have recently changed you Macro Security
Level to Low in order to eliminate the dialog instructing you to install Jet
4.0 SP8, I urge you to go back and turn on expression blocking now that SP8
is available. You can turn on expression blocking by doing the following:
1. Install Jet 4.0 SP8 using the updates described above.
2. Open Access 2003. You don't need to open a database.
3. On the Tools menu, point to Macros and then click Security.
4. Change your Macro Security setting to Medium and click OK.
5. You will be prompted with a dialog asking if you want to block unsafe
expressions, click Yes.
(Note: This dialog looks very much like the one telling you to install
SP8, but the wording is different.)
6. You will be prompted that you need to restart Access for the setting to
take effect.
When you restart Access 2003, you will not be configured to block unsafe
expressions using the Jet 4.0 Sandbox Mode. When running at a Macro Security
Level of Medium, you will receive a security warning when opening any
database that is either not digitally signed or that is digitally signed by
a publisher that is not trusted. More information is available about the
various Macro Security Levels in help or by reading the topic at
http://office.microsoft.com/assistance/preview.aspx?AssetID=HP010446071033.
If you decide that the Low Macro Security Level is acceptable for your
situation, you can go back to the Security dialog and change you Macro
Security Level again. This time you will be prompted with a question asking
if you would like to allow unsafe expressions to run. I suggest choosing No.
When you choose No, you will be configuring Access 2003 to run under Low
Macro Security, but to continue to block unsafe expressions.
If you have any questions regarding this functionality, feel free to check
out the Access 2003 Assistance Center
(http://office.microsoft.com/assistance/topcategory.aspx?TopLevelCat=CH79001
