Javascript links are ignored

When I click on javascript links, nothing happens. If I right-click and open
in a new window, I get the message "The page cannot be displayed, etc." I
have exhausted the Knowledge Base, and have downloaded every update and Java
machine I can find.

There is some kind of security problem here, because if I change the prefix
to https:// I can then open most (but not all) java links. However, even
when I set my security to the lowest settings the problem is still there.

I use WinXP Home, IE 6. This problem began only recently, and to my
knowledge I made no changes to my settings. Thanks for any help you can
give.

Check to make sure active scripting is enabled

tools>internet options>security>cusom>enable active
scripting

Been there. Done that. In fact, I enabled every blasted thing that I could.
Still nothing.

Are you running any security filters such as Norton's NIS?
A possible explanation of your symptom would be that you have
something filtering out inline JavaScript if it is detected by a proxy.
Pages sent by https protocol would have to be passed through the proxy
undetected and thus unchanged because they would be encrypted.

BTW Java (the language) and JavaScript (the language) are quite
different.
