Win XP, w/ SP-2; AMD chip 1.8mHz; 512mB RAM; and, up to a few days ago,
really great performance! But no more!

I have done just about everything that has been suggested but I still am
unable to activate any internet links that are JavaScripts. In addition, I
now get funny noises through my subwoofer (similar to cursor move noises in
past versions of Windows OS) even though the volume is turned completely
down and the OS volume control is muted for all devices.

To reiterate ["Can't link to 'Ringtones'" posted 10/26/2004] I've done all
that I've found so far, including installing the file and two upgrades
referred to on www.virtualmachine.tk. I also tried "repairing" XP but since
I've installed SP2 my OS refuses to recognize my install disk, saying I
already have a newer version installed. I feel reasonably sure that all my
problems began when I downloaded SP2 and installed it (and it appears many,
many others are in the same boat!) I would think that MS people would be
monitoring NG's like this and fabricate some kind of response to keep us
from battering down their doors.

I just wish anyone who has been successful in resolving this issue and can
once again have a "virtual machine" and resolve JavaScript links through IE6
would either tell me how they did it or give me a little sympathy.

Thanks, but that's the wrong problem -- an old one... and I had done what
you suggested ages ago.

This is new.

Before the WinXP SP-2 "fix" I could click on JavaScript links in the
Cingular.com website and listen to ringtones (and a variety of other
stuff -- all JavaScript links), and it all worked. Since SP-2 I started
getting the message about the Java VirtualMachine not being able to find the
main class, and the JavaScript links in this particular site stopped working
for me. I also began getting clicking sounds that I used to associate with
cursor movements when RAM memory was full (earlier versions of Windows).
And from what I see in the NG's and some forums, others are beginning to
experience the same problems -- all after installing the SP-2 for WinXP.
Incidentally, the SP-2 install effectively makes your WinXP disc useless.

Oddly, I can click on JavaScript links in the BankOne site to view
individual cancelled checks. Those particular JS's work, but all the ones
on the Cingular site do not (yes, I talked with them about it, and they
tested them and found no problem -- but then they're not using WinXP and IE6
to view them).

Sorry, sorry, sorry -- I didn't follow all the way through your message.
I had returned my Internet Options to "Default" and when I checked again, I
found "Enable third-party browser extensions" was checked; I unchecked it,
rebooted, and now I can click and resolve the JavaScript links.
But I also went through the two "Run" procedures you listed, and those may
have had an effect as well.
Forgive my impatience and thank you for ending all my frustrations. Now, I
can have cool ringtones on my new cell!

If unchecking "Enable third-party browser extensions" fixed the problem, you
have adware or spyware in your machine.
First eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/cwshredder.zip
**Post your HijackThis log to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**
Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.
CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

If nothing there helps, please post back to this thread.
