I caught a nasty java virus last week running 2000 despite my AV software
(trend micro). Had the HD wiped and reinstalled XP and Norton. Now my program
doesn't run and wants me to down load Java plug in. The site is a NOAA looped
radar site (http://www.srh.noaa.gov/radar/latest/DS.p37cr/si.kjgx.shtml) so
I'm sure that the requirement is legitimate but I can't afford to open up a
window to this virus again.

Is this Java plug-in the problem or 2000 or my AV software? or what?

if the av software didn't catch it how do you know it was a virus and not
some other problem?? that page works fine for me... i am using the sun java
runtime version 1.4.1_02 right now on winxp, but i don't run norton av.

Which version of Java were you using?
The Microsoft version is less prone to the Byte verify trojan than the Sun's
version "you didn't mention the name of the virus you had."
If you decide to install jave here is a link for the last M/S version.

Sounds like XP no longer uses the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine by default.
They have a patch if it was previously installed. Seems MS has closed the
door by not using the Microsoft virual machine? Found information on the
Java site regarding the problem, claims you can prevent this infection if you
run Java VM?

Your thoughts on this?

ms no longer distributes their vm because of the legal agreement with sun.
that it also has a security hole or two is a moot point now unless you are
still running the last one they distributed. i would disable the ms vm if
you have it and get the latest sun stuff and go from there.
