java virtual machine problems with xp???

I bought a new comp with windows xp but now when i try playing certain games online its says i need a java virtual player and prompts to download one. After doing so it still gives me the message and it wont let me play?

determine which version of the Virtual Machine you've got installed, if any

good links for additional downloads if you need to install.

I am having the same problem with a java virtual machine. I have spent hours trying different things but have found nothing to work yet. I wish I had known this when I purchased the computer.
