The Java update takes a VERY LONG time to download and install. I would not
bother with it except some applications/programs may use Java. Is there a
way to hasten the Java updating process?

How large is the file you are trying to download? The latest Java
1.6.0 is about a 12.5mb download. If the file is larger than that, you
may be trying to download the developer's kit or something like that.
If this is the case, go to
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
and scroll down to the Java Runtime Environment JRE 6 and download the
Window's version from there.
