Hi All,

I have been getting an "Error: object expected" error message when using
Microsoft's Knowledge Base site:
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[ln];kbhowto). The error
is intermittent...sometimes when I refresh the sceen the page will work
correctly other times it does not.

I searched my local hard drive and noticed the following:

1) When the error occurs, there are many new files in the temp folder with
the cached web page that have size 0.

2) When the error does NOT occur, those same files are several kilobytes in
size.

So, perhaps the error either stops the extra files from being downloaded or
the fact that they are not downloaded causes the errors.

Also, when the error occurs on the Knowledge Base site the drop-down for
"Select a Microsoft Product" is empty.

Any ideas? Is IE 6 busted...or more likely, is my installation of IE 6
busted?

Thank You,
David

I took Mr. Leboeuf advice and installed the Microsoft scripting update (file
name "scr56en.exe") but I still have this problem. Any other ideas?

David

Which popup stopper or security software are you using?
Disable them is any.

Under Tools/Internet Options/Security/Custom level.
If you have SUN and MS Java enable, just select one of them.

Hi Mr. Leboeuf,

I don't have any popup stopper or security software...I'm just very careful
about where I surf and what I download.

I'm not sure what you mean by "If you have SUN and MS Java enable, just
select one of them." I looked under "Tools/Internet Options/Security/Custom
level" and the closest thing I found that talked about Java was "Microsoft
VM/Java permissions" and this was set to "High safety".

help,
David

All,

I still have no idea what to do here. I still get "Error: object expected"
errors trying to view the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Does anyone know anything that may help?...please?

David -

I have the same problem - getting "Error: object expected" msg and blank
form windows at Knowledge Base site, but it happens *every* time I visit
there.

Refreshing doesn't help. I get no entries to my TEMP folder like you get.
I get similar errors at many web sites, but rarely any interference with
using the sites.

This is a 1wk old WinXP system, DSL thru router firewall, but my other 98 &
98SE systems act the same and have done so for several months.

I've mused whether installing WebWasher messed up my systems, although
deactivating WW or even removing it doesn't help. Any chance you use or
have tried WebWasher?

Email me (see instructions below) if any thoughts, to compare notes, or find
a solution. I'd email you, but don't have your address.

I tried a little experimentation and this is what I found:

If I disable the Microsoft VM (Microsoft VM/Java Permissions/Disable Java),
no change. Still often get "Object not found" and " 'd' is undefined".

If I set "Scripting/Active scripting" to "Prompt", I am prompted with a
"Scripts are usually safe. Do you want to allow scripts to run?" dialog.

If I say "No" to the above dialog, nothing works on the Knowledge Base (no
surprise there). Is there anything else I can change to fix this problem?

If I say "No" to the above dialog, nothing works on the Knowledge Base (no
surprise there). Is there anything else I can change to fix this problem?

David,

You must give more details if you need help with your diagnosis.

How many times do you have to say no? What specifically do mean
by "nothing works" (what all links did you try to use? what were the results?)

Try setting other security settings to Prompt also
and make a detailed list of what questions you see
if you click on Yes to each prompt.

You could also do the same thing with the Privacy tab
to give you a prompt whenever a Cookie needed to be changed.

Good luck
