java problems

I have what I think are 2 related problems. when XP loads
it tells me that microsoft virtual machine launcher cant
be found so it aborts. 2nd problem is when playing
runescape the computer will lock up after about 30
minutes or so the first time i play, then I reboot and it
will only work for seconds. runescape is an online java
application. any ideas?
