Have a Win2k Server with SP4. Last week it started having
performance issues. No Event Viewer information.
Computer would just slow to the point of non-
responsivenes. After a couple of reboots, was able to
access Task Manager before the slowness hit and saw that
java.exe was maxing out the cpu. Not running any web
applications or java applications on the server. Basic
file and print and app sharing. I killed the process and
performance is now normal. Also, killing the process did
not impair any running or available programs. When we
reboot, however, the java.exe returns. Does anyone have
experience with this?

No idea what that is used for. Obviously is sounds like java. I would
check to see where that file is located and if there is anything in the
properties of the file that describes its source or purpose.
Check out the following regsitry key I am betting it gets started from here.
HKLM\System\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run

Check out the entries there, and you will most likely see an entry for
java.exe

As a side note this is where alot of spyware and other menacing programs are
called from.

Thanks for the suggestion. Spyware is my biggest
concern. We have the latest and greatest VirusScan, and
the user regularly updates the definition files, but
that's not 100% safe.

I have been using ad-aware and it seems to work pretty good.
Catches more Clsids than I do ;)

Got it fixed. Found an errant java in the registry,
deleted the key and the file. I went to windows update
and it downloaded a MyDoom removal tool which took care of
the rest of the issue.
Thanks!
