Hi,

Someone mention Java 5 update 10 a little while ago. Well it seems that Java 6 is now
generally available. See http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/index.html

Hi, Chris
Yes, Sun Java has now updated to build 6.
See: --> (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp)

For folks updating - please set your Browser to accept "cookies" -
otherwise the download *may* not be successful.

For those running Windows XP - you may safely remove the Java Update 10
from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, as it is no longer needed.

Also, one updated, the automatic update will be re-set, you may want to
change the automatic updates settings via Sun Java in Control Panel to [none]
since the automatic mechanism does *not* work.
This has been well researched and _is_ true. All you wind up with is an app
that polls in the background hogging system resources.

Regards,

Randy

Randy:
My Java icon in the Control Panel and the Java Installation Verification
site, both are showing that I have the the latest Java Runtime Environmental
(JRE) version in 1.5.0-09, now called JRE5. The new JRE 6 is out, shall I
install it or wait for the Installation Verification to offer and autoinstall
it? What do you think? Please help.

The Java autoupdate thingy is always a little late; the latest JRE 5 is
1.5.0-10 (not 09). If you want to take advantage of the JRE 6 features,
uninstall the previous JRE, then install JRE 6 from the download site.

I'd wait, myself. As long as there are no significant security issues with
the existing "5" versions, it won't hurt to wait.

I recommend a manual download and install since the auto-updater is terribly
unreliable if not unfunctional completely.

Please read my previous reply to Chris Wood, all that you need is there.

I've been having problems with Java 6. A few websites that use Java
to stream videos totally froze up my IE 7 and Firefox browsers. Firefox in
particular was hard hit at these sites. I had to restart my PC for Firefox
to function again. I uninstalled Java 6, and installed Java 5 update 10,
and now everything works fine.
