Java 5 Works in Vista x86 & x64

Although there is an intransigent claiming Java
5 Update 7 does not work with I.E. 7 in Vista
x86 and x64, he is spreading false information.

Instead of download the offline install file,
select the (Online Installation) on the Java web
site and install Java by that method. I have
done this in both Vista x86 and x64, and both
work without any problems.

Do not download the offline install file.
Apparently there is a conflict with the
installer and Vista. As a result, when using
the offline file, it appears to not completely
install and causes problems with I.E. 7.
 
That's odd. I downloaded the full installer and installed it offline and
had no problems whatsoever. (Java 5 update7).
Perhaps it may have more to do with either having Protected Mode on or off,
or UAC enabled or disabled as to why some people have been having problems
with Java 5.

Since then I decided to try the new Beta Java 6, and that is also working
fine.
 
I did the online installation. IE would open to a white screen, 100% CPU
useage, and an ever increasing Commit Charge. The only way to stop it was
to restart the computer. After uninstalling Java everything is back to
normal.

I bugged the problem to MS, am I wasting my time to bug them the fix too?

I had a similar experience. Both the online and the offline installs would
install fine and I could even got to java.com and verify the installation.
After rebooting IE7 would lock up whenever java was used. I downloaded the
java beta and it works fine.

I have to disagree, this is not false information. Just because you may not
have had problems, it does not mean there is not a problem.
I just did the online installation and it screwed up my IE7. Blank page
goes to not responding.
Uninstalled java and IE7 now works fine.
 
I also had the same experience. I was able to download and install Java 6
Beta as suggested by several other posters. I seems to work without remark.

Yep the Java 6 works for me.
 
Java 6 works OK for me also. Only one small problem - no java icon in
notification area when on java webpage. I checked the option, but it still
doesn't appear. Otherwise no problems
 
I did notice that after my post, so I guess it works with "some remark."

Now, since we have two Beta products by companies that notoriously do not
get along, whose bug is this?
 
Microsoft is working with its partners and with its own teams internally to
reduce the clutter in the notifications area. Depending on why you like to
have it there you might find putting it in the Quick Launch useful to you.
