Is the Java 2 Runtime Environment a replacement for the Microsoft Virtual
Machine? For example, I have some HP hubs that have a web console embedded
in them. On a computer with a fresh install of Windows XP and IE 6, I
cannot access the web console. I downloaded the Java 2 Runtime Environment
from www.java.com and it still did not work. I then searched for the
Microsoft Virtual Machine, downloaded it and now I can access the web
console with no problem. I have read some of the other posts in this
newsgroup about Java but I am still confused.

Is the Java 2 Runtime Environment a direct replacement of the Microsoft
Virtual Machine?

Thanks.

I have uninstalled the Java 2 Runtime Environment because apparently it does
not provide the same functionality as the Microsoft Virtual Machine. How do
we migrate away from the Microsoft Virtual Machine if the Java 2 Runtime
Environemnt does not provide the same functionality?

I believe that installing Java 2 + Java Media Framework for Windows provides
equivalent functionality of MS Virtual Machine (though slower). Have you
tried that?

I have already installed the Microsoft Virtual Machine. Is there a way to
uninstall it or to disable it?

From Jim Byrd:
Both Java VM's can co-exist on your machine quite nicely. Just select
which one you want to use in Tools|Internet Options|Advanced and restart
all IE browsers. Here, courtesy of Michel Gallant, MVP Security, is a
tiny utility which allows you to toggle and view status of your current
Java VM vendor associated with IE:
