WinXP Home Edition

Is this plug-in necessary for a recreational internet surfer with a modest
WinXP desktop PC? I don't remember how it became installed on my system but
it randomly opens up and a little "cup of coffee" icon lands in my system
tray. What is this app, how do I uninstall (if necessary) and why does
anyone need it?

Thanks.

It sounds like Sun's java machine which most people are using now because
the MS Java Virtual Machine has been pulled to comply with a settlement
between Microsoft and Sun.

Yes, you need it. The very fact that it starts-up from time to time as you
visit various sites proves it. So don't uninstall it.

I have both MS Virtual Machine and the Java Runtime Envoronment installed. My keyboard and mouse both freeze when I am playing some games, either online, or installed. I would like to uninstall VM, but it is not listed under Add and Remove Programs. How can I uninstall it?

Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Make sure you do not have them both enabled.

I too understand it is needed. I just installed "Java 2 Run Time
Environment v1.4.2_04. Which I guess is the latest. But my firewall
has advised me that Java was trying to access the web when I just now
turned my computer on. I don't like a program auto-connecting like
that without telling me about it. I told my firewall program to not
allow it (as it suggested to me). I am just wondering if I will
suffer any consequences as a result of me not letting it connect to
where-ever...

Perhaps it is just looking for updates, but still, I don't like it.
All of my stuff - Windows Updates, and Norton SystemWorks I have
turned off the auto-update-checking feature and I do it manually from
time to time.
