Dell Dimension once worked fine on network
Reinstalled XP Pro to it

Now it can't see the network, nor be seen by the network
It can access the Internet through the router just fine
I can PING it from 2 other computers using IP
It can ping them also
Linksys router factory defaults, never changed

Other 2 PC's networking as usual, both XP Pro

Has no firewall installed. alg.exe stopped in Services
Shut down all firewalls on other PC's
All AV shut off
No passwords on any machine
No user accounts other than administrator

Using default MSHOME workgroup
Doesn't show up in Network Workgroups
Ran network setup wizard
Tried Add a Network Place

Make sure that NetBIOS Over TCP/IP is enabled:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection.
3. Click Properties.
4. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
5. Click Properties.
6. Click Advanced.
7. Click WINS.
8. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.

Make sure that the Server and Workstation services are running.

Why did you stop alg.exe?

Make sure that NetBIOS Over TCP/IP is enabled:
Isn't that a big security hole?
I've never used it with XP and the old OS didn't have it enabled.
1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection.
3. Click Properties.
4. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
5. Click Properties.
6. Click Advanced.
7. Click WINS.
8. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.

Make sure that the Server and Workstation services are running. yep

Why did you stop alg.exe?
In case it was blocking connectivity

You're welcome.

Are you sure that you've never used NetBIOS over TCP/IP? Windows uses
NetBIOS over TCP/IP for file sharing and network browsing. It's not a
security hole at all on a properly set up LAN with a firewall between
your computers and the Internet.

I don't recommend stopping any services. Windows XP networking works
fine with all services in their default settings.

Have you tried pinging computers by name? If pinging by IP address
succeeds and pinging by computer name fails, the problem is almost
certainly that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled.

If you mean that it can't be seen in Network Places, then bear in mind this
applet is seldom, if ever, reliable.

Try connecting from the commandline with:

net use H: \\computername\sharename /user:username

obviously, substituting the required values.

Hi Guys
Just read this post about your problem networking. I to have a
Dell Dimension 4600i & gone though the same problems moreor less faults'

I believe you have a driver issue! Logon to the Dell support page
and look for the downloads Dell support centre, install it ,and let it
analyse your system

when it has finished you will have a list of faults etc ,and drivers or
patches . I think you should be looking for R67150. driver for ethernet .

I dont propose you should take all that shown , only whats appliccable
to the fault'

Sorry I'm late getting back on this topic.
Windows Firewall had turned itself on, after I had turned it off.
Problem solved!

I had turned off both ZA firewalls and both AV(Grisoft) but Windows did it's
thing and took over. :(
I did notice that AVG now has a firewall that turns itself on, but the network
still works fine.

Never ran NetBios over TCP and still not. Just that damned firewall.
