Have a computer where the AGP video card (nvidia mx440, I believe) isn't
showing up in device manager. Thought a format and reinstall of XP would
solve the issue, it didn't. The strange thing is that you can still adjust
the resolution and color quality in the Display control panel, but it won't
let you update the driver. It says "Default monitor on ". Nothing is
listed. Again, device manager doesn't even have a Display adapters tree
(there is no onboard video). Any help greatly appreciated.

Have you updated your mother board AGP drivers?

I suppose it's a stupid question, but did you install the video card
driver?

Didn't think to try that. Will give it a shot tomorrow when I have access to
the computer. Thanks.

XP only installed basic VGA drivers and you need to install the card
specific driver manually.

Might have to install the latest version of Microsoft Direct X. Some
drivers have problems with older versions.

Try going to Nvidia website and download the forceware for your card.
I just had to find a win98 driver for my friend's nvidia card, and I
believe your Geforce 4 MX440 is supported.

Lates DirectX Version is always recommended unless PC is really old
(not able to run XP/2000)

Also you should update your chipset/AGP GART drivers
