Hi can anyone help.

I recently bought a piece of hardware. The software was missing, so I
trawled the web for suitable drivers.

I manually installed a similar driver, the driver is almost right, but
not the one I need.

I have uninstalled the harware and tried to re-install the hardware.

Plug and play still thinks the hardware belongs to the old driver, how
do I make XP think this is a new install and break the link?

Thanks if you can help!

Dave

I have tried that. The device is unistalled... I reboot and XP
re-installs it the same.

Uninstall it using the device manager.

You might try letting it install with the wrong driver and then doing Update
Driver from Device Manager and pointing to the new one. Also, possibly
deleting the devices inf file in windows\inf (if you can identify the
specific one) would help.
There is a hardware device id in the registry, but these are a headache to
identify there, so I would try the above first.

Do a "roll-back driver" in Device Manager (same thing as below), or a system
restore, or restore a back up/system image or whatever of your system by
which ever means you use.
