I've done everything this website says, but my computers wont netw

Ok I have 2 computers and DSL hooked up to a hub. Both computers are part of
the WORKGROUP workgroup, both say they are connected to a network and the
internet, but neither show each other on the network. Ones running XP and
ones running Vista. Both have file sharing active...can someone please help
me? I've been at this for a week and a half now. thanks.
 
I've tried this and now I can map them in Network and sharing, but I still
can't access them. I have to connect to them using IP addr.

Close but not quite there yet.
 
How do I do that? I mean if I cant get this to work that seems like the next
best thing.
 
Follow Joe's link to kb922120. Load the prtocol on your XP machine and then
Vista can "discover" the XP machines. It doesn't actually help anything. But
in a inch you can map your XP shares via IP addr in the Windows gui to at
least see them.

This still falls very short of actually "working"

I still can't access the Vista machine from XP though.
 
Well neither computer shows up on either ones network...which I dont get at
all. I wish I could just downgrade this Vista down to XP but I only have the
XP Cd for my old one and I cant have 2 comps with the same serial. But
yeah...you know how to get the computers to first show each other? My XP
doesnt even show my Vista.
 
ok I installed the thing he suggested, and now it shows the comp in the
workgroup, but when I click it or go to the properties it says the network
path was not found.
 
Ok, now you've caught up with me. That's where I am right now too. I can see
the Vista machine from XP, but I don't have permission to access it. I can
see the XP machine from Vista but can't get to it at all, except via IP addr.
 
Alright then..I'll do some searching. If you find something, message here or

Ok that sounds like you need to enable netbios over TCP/IP. To do that lets
open network and sharing, select manage network connections. RIGHT click on
the network connection in question (for example "local area connection") and
choose properties. Next scroll down to TCP/IP (V4) and select the
properties button. Now select the advanced button. Go to the WINS tab.
Select "enable lmhosts lookup" and "enable netbios over TCP/IP"

I am assuming that both machines have the same userid with the same
password. In other words, if you're logging on to the vista machine as
userid "john" with password "vista" that you have the same userid and
password on the XP machine and that ID has access BOTH at the share level
and the folder level.

On XP RIGHT click the folder in question and choose properties. On the
sharing tab check the permissions using the permissions button to ensure
account "john" has at least read access (or more if require). Next on the
SECURITY tab make sure that account "john" has at least read access (or more
if required).

Note: if you're using simple file sharing on XP this won't work and you'll
need to turn that off (simple file sharing always authenticates users using
the guest account which is not the account you will attempt to access with
when coming from the vista machine).

Well I did what you said and my Vista still doesnt show up on my XP, and my
Vista is still not accessible from my XP. I have to go "workgroup" to even
show the icon of my Vista, I'm not sure if thats normal or not. Both
accounts have the same name , no password, and are both administrators.
However there is no "permissions" or "security" tab, so does that mean I'm on
simple file sharing? and I used http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307874 and
the "Use simple file sharing (recommended)" option wasnt there...

You know I hate how this forum deletes your reply while asking you to log
back on after a few minutes.

Netbios over IP is enabled, first thing I did.

According to the document describing how to set up sharing, as long as you
turn off password protected sharing, anyone on the network including guests
can access a share.

Simple file sharing is always on with XP home, you can't turn it off. Vista
would never be able to talk to XP Home if guests weren't supported. Imori,
those tabs weren't there because I suspect you are also running XP Home.

According to all the documents so far, everything "should" be working,
however something obviously is still amiss.
 
Yeah I tried turning off password protected file sharing on the Vista too and
nothing happened. And yeah I'm on XP home...I've run out of options. Lookin
to Joe on this one I think.
 
ok this is getting annoying, for some reason my DSN will randomly stop
working after a couple of hours and I have to restart to fix it... but yeah,
I went to the network and sharing on my Vista and I got a map of my network..

It shows both computers going into the switch. Also, for some reason I have
2 networks going through my Local Area Network connection now... thats the
map for the one labeled "Network" the other is labeled "Network 4" but I cant
seem to get to a map for it. So yeah..if that helps anyone solve this.
 
I forgot some key information in my last post..with my DSL modem there is the
Ethernet port (which is running into the switch/hub), and there is a USB
connection, which I'm running into the old computer (labeled "home" on the
map). I think the USB is where the internet is comming through... :\ I really
dont know.
 
well this is great.. now not even my Vista is showing up on the XP, even if I
install the update mentioned earlier >.> it just gets worse and worse. Sorry
for all the posts guys.

Ahh. That's a problem. The account should have a password (I believe this
was a change in Vista). If both machines are not in the same workgroup then
you won't see one machine from the other (particularly from the XP side)
unless you browse the workgroup the vista machine is in.

In other words if XP machine is in a workgroup called MSHOME and Vista
machine is in a workgroup called WORKGROUP you won't see the Vista machine
unless you go into Network neighborhood, entire network and click on
WORKGROUP. This is normal.

If you're using Simple File sharing then you won't see the two tabs as
mentioned.

What version of XP is this?
