My windows v4 update folder has an xml file dated 8/04/2004. I downloaded
the sp2 file from the alternate site at Microsoft, saved to disk and
installed.
Previous to Sp2 I did the update routine manually. Autoupdate was shut off.
Post Sp2 the update setting is to inform me that there is an update
available.
Today I noticed that iuctl.dll is NOT in my System32 folder

On the next occasion I go to the Microsoft Update site and the scan for
updates occurs is the presence of Sp2 going to be discovered?
Of course, we many not have to go to the update site <little grin> if Sp2
installed without fault and its presence in the system is not noticable<BIG
grin>

Re: Today I noticed that iuctl.dll is NOT in my System32 folder
There is a reference to the iuctl.dll as a shared file in the
Registry -HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shared ....which
is pointing nowhere since the iuctl.dll is not in the System32 folder.(It
exists in the i386 folder)
Is this .dll vital to getting in to the updates?
ALSO does the folder name change to v5 if Sp2 was acquired through
Microsoft's update centre (which I didn't do so I have a v4 folder with
iuhist.xml)

Rose,

iuctl.dll WAS needed for the V4 Windows Update site, but is not
needed for V5 and was deleted from the system when XP SP2 was
installed .

You can always change the way Automatic Updates is done by right
clicking My Computer, choose Properties, click the Automatic Updates
tab, and setting it to what you prefer. Click Apply, then OK to make
the setting stick.

It's a backup created when you installed XP SP2 . iuctl.dll is NOT
needed for the V5 Windows Update site. Installing XP SP2 cleared out
the V4 folder and left only the history file (iuhist.xml).
The V5 cabs are in the WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution folder.

I have a similar problem to the one that RoseW raised.

I am running XP Pro and Norton SystemWorks one button check reports registry
issues due to the following files as being missing after installation of sp2.

iuctl.dll
admwprox
rtcimsp.dll
msppcnfg.exe

I have managed to locate 3 of the files but msppcnfg.exe is not on the drive
anywhere.

Iuctl.dll is in C:\Windows\$NTServicePackUninstall$ and is 113KB date 9/2/2004
9:08PM

Admwprox.dll is in 3 places
- C:\Windows\$NTServicePackUninstall$ and is 34KB dated 2/9/2003 8:30PM
- C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 and is 43KB dated 4/8/2004 5:56PM
- C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Dowload\6ca7b3a8efd5a9b6f87fff395a2eb989 and
is 43KB dated 4/8/2004 5:56PM

Rtcimsp.dll is in C:\Windows\$NTServicePackUninstall$ and is 199KB dated
14/4/2003 8:00PM

The dates may confuse you - they are in the dd/mm/yyyy format used in Oz.

I understand that iuctl.dll is no longer needed and that registry entry can be
deleted. Do you have any info on the other files?

Just as the installation completed and the settings in the security section
were required I found I could not just choose the setting I preferred (no
automatic updates) the little icon remained in the systray and interfered
with the start up of (my own) antivirus, firewall. I used 'inform me' and
that satisfied the requirement and the icon plus message went away. That was
the only 'bump' in the road with my installation and it was 'operator
confusion' more than anything. I prepared for the installation and followed
the instructions posted on http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm
Its my opinion that having everything that starts up shut off via msconfig
plus doing the chkdsk/defrag were worth the time.

Thanks for informing about the iuctl.dll as not needed. Its odd that the
update removed it but did not remove it from the common shared section of
the registry.
I'm curious about admwprox.rtcimsp.dll & msppcnfg.exe mention by the post of
JC -perhaps they are files specific to XpPro.

I wouldn't trust NSW, JC. Have no copy of msppcnfg.exe on my XP Pro
box, either. It appears that admwprox.dll and rtcimsp.dll are backed
up into uninstall folders and the main backup of your previous
version of XP Pro, C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 . Hesitate to
recommend you remove the reg entries based on what NSW reports.
It is apparent that they are no longer required and are being saved
in case you want/need to uninstall XP SP2's .
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Dowload is where the WU files are
first downloaded to.

To check the .dll files :
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/servicedesks/fileversion/dllinfo.asp

Google should be a help with msppcnfg.exe.
