On my 17 inch Compaq Computer Monitor Screen there is no area beyond the the
ITEM or window on the screen. If you wish to drag something to make an ICON
to appear on your "DESKTOP" area... there is no space showing??? How do you
REDUCE the size of items on your monitor or screen????? Sometimes the page
on the screen is SO BIG that I can barely get my mouse arrow over the "X" to
close out the screen!!! Thank you for your help!!! Pat and James German
P.S. THANK YOU!!! YOU GUYS ARE REALLY HELPING ME!!!!! I got my ICONS and
drug them on to the "desktop"...

Next to that big red X is the size box if you have 2 "file" squares in that
box click the box and the page will reduce in size.
At which point you should be able to click and hold the edges to drag to the
size you wish.

Maybe you are talking about Screen Resolution. Right-click on the Desktop and
Choose Properties. Click Settings tab and set the resolution as required. The
good resolution for 17" monitor is 1024x768.

Hope this help, let us know!

Change the screen resolution to something larger - which makes the available
space greater and the icons smaller.
Although - a 17" monitor may only get to what - 1024x768? (That may be a
native resolution.)

You should also try to control things with folders - even your start menu.

I can't tell from his question whether that's his problem or not, but your
suggestion is certainly a good place to start.

The good resolution for 17" monitor is 1024x768.

However, I disagree strongly with this statement.

If his an LCD, he should run it at its native resolution, whatever that it
is. It may be (even likely is) 1024x768, but it could be something else
too.

If his is a CRT monitor, he should run at whatever resolution he finds
comfortable for *his* eyes. Like you, I generally prefer 1024x768 on a 17",
but we all have eyes of different ages and different vision. What works best
for you or for me isn't necessarily best for him. So I would recommend that
he start with 1024x768, but adjust up or down from there until he finds the
resolution that works best for *him*.
