Item sticks in Print Queue

Printer is a new HP laser Jet P1006

It seems like every time I turn around my wife says the printer won't
print. She usually has items backed up in the print Queue. When I try
to cancel the jobs it just says deleting but nothing happens. The only
way I have been able to get the items out of the que is removing the
plug from the wall and rebooting the PC.
Any ideas?

See if HP has a newer driver on their website, if you're
running a potentially older one from an included CD. Be
sure to uninstall the old and reboot before installing the
new.

If the printer has some of the job in memory, then the cancel job from queue
never seems to work. You'll have to cancel the jobs from the print queue and
turn the printer off and on again as well.

I have one of those cheapish HP OfficeJets. The queue often gets hung
up by Low Ink warnings. Here's the kicker: The warning is apparently
being made in a locked user account, instead of the currently logged
account. That makes it look as if the queue is jammed, because you
cannot see the warning dialog. Also, that printer bitches about low ink
hundreds and hundreds of pages before the quality declines.

Several calls to HP's India call centers produced nothing but
frustration and a pervasive desire to drive there and strangle the lot
of them. Executive support here in the states was more coherent and
understanding, but completely able to resolve the problem. I should
never have switched from Epson to HP.

My rant aside, perhaps your problem is similar. If so, you can mediate
it, a bit, by making sure to log out whenever you're done with the PC.

If you are running XP or W2K try this ...

@echo off
echo.
echo Purging the print queue . . .
net stop Spooler
echo Deleting all print jobs . . .
ping localhost -n 4 > nul
del /q %SystemRoot%\system32\spool\printers\*.*
net start Spooler
echo Done!
ping localhost -n 4 > nul

Save it as batch file, something like 'PurgePQ.bat'.

Just double click on the file to run it.
