Computer on desktop, drive C, drive D and My Document should be there, but
there
is nothing but a small grey icon at the left top of the open window. My
OS is Windows2000 with SP4. The user is administrator. Thanks a lot.

Your C: drive should NOT have disappeared since it is the system
drive. This may be due to a virus, spyware or ActiveX or other sort
of restrictions. What else do you have installed on your machine? Do
you have an updated antivirus software installed? Do you have an
anti-spyware software installed restricting things? If you
right-click on your start button and choose Explore, does C: drive
show up?
Otherwise, not sure how to help you. Too many factors. I would
suggest to post to one of the Windows newsgroups such as:
microsoft.public.windows.2000.filesystem
microsoft.public.windows.2000.general.

exactly where it is but if you can get TweakUI you can unhide them.
You might also install Spybot Search & Destroy and scan for spyware
that could have caused this.
It's actually an Administrative Setting in User Configuration seciont
in the local group policy on a machine, but not one specifically to
hide C: drive, but TweakUI will do it.
You're right, it's probably spyware, or even a virus.
Kevin D. Goodknecht Sr. said:I would certainly run some kind of Anti-spyware software on the
machine and a good pop-up blocker. There are several softwares
available, and I try to keep from pushing one particular software
over another. IMO, SpyBot S&D has worked very well for me, its free,
but they do take donations. What I like about this one over AdAware,
is it has the ability to not only remove spyware, the free version
can block spyware before it has a chance to get on the machine. I
like it because it can update itself, and immunize the system on a
scheduled basis. I have mine running daily at 4AM. The reason for the
good pop-up blocker is my research has shown that and good percentage
of spyware gets into a system from pop-ups, especially from gambling
sites. Definitely stay way from those pop-ups that say "Your system
is infected with spyware" then the want you to click a button that
wants to scan your system for spyware, clicking the button actually
installs spyware on your system.

I likd SpyBot S&D, but I've found the Microsoft Antispyware is a
great tool as well. What do you think of that one? I've been
installing it on my client machines and it's been protecting them
pretty well.

suppose, but the warnings it continually pops up are just about as
iritating as the spyware it blocks.
What I really like about Spybot S&D is once it is set up correctly
you don't even know it is there. I do a manual scan occasionally. In
fact, I did one today because it was on my mind due to this thread
and I can't remember that last time I did one, it had to be several
months, and my system was clean. Pretty good considering that I have
the occasional teenage user on this thing.
