Italics instead of plain text.

Hi! I have a minor annoyance with my laptop that's running Windows XP Pro
with SP3 installed. I don't know exactly when it happened, but I noticed
that the text messages that are displayed on the Welcome screen have all
started to show up in italics. My desktop PC which is running Windows XP
Home doesn't have this, so how can I change the laptop back to non-italic
text on the welcome screen?

The non italic version of the font used for the Welcome screen has been
deleted or become corrupted. Windows will automatically use the italic
version if it can't find the normal version.

Review the list on the Item: box.

Caution, note what is there so you can return the item to its original
setting if you change it. Best to note with paper and pencil if your
memory is like mine.

That was the first place I looked and nothing had changed there. I've used
tweakui to repair the fonts folder, no joy. I've searched the help files at
Microsoft support. I've googled 'Welcome Screen Fonts' and perused several
web pages that didn't help either. I've just run out of ideas on where to
look. I know at one time tweakui had the ability to copy one's current
display settings to the welcome screen, such things as fonts, screensaver,
and so forth. In the version I have now it doesn't appear to be there
anymore.

You know when I saw this it made a lot of sense. So I fired up Acronis
and mounted my backup image and compared the fonts in my font folder to
the backup. Found that there were about 20 some odd fonts that were no
longer in the folder as compared to the backup. So I reinstalled them
and all is fine now...

Glad it's resolved.

The curious one that I am, I looked in my windows/fonts folder and
there are 500+ files. I don't have anything fancy installed.

Does anyone know the font file that was perhaps missing, what the
default font file is for such things and if the default font file is
missing, what would get used instead to display italics? Was one of
the font files reinstalled from the backup the default file? Where
does all that get set up?

The default font in this instance is 'Tahoma'.

In this particular case there are separate font files for the normal and
italic (as well as bold and bold italic) versions of the font. Thus if the
Tahoma Normal font is missing, then Tahoma Italic is used instead. If both
were missing, then I guess, the Tahoma Bold would get used (another separate
file) followed by Tahoma Bold Italic. I have no idea what XP does if all 4
go missing.

It is set up in the 'Advanced' option of 'Display Properties' from the
'Appearance' tab.

My mistake. The default font is 'Trebuchet MS'. They are pretty similar.
