Italic text.

I know I should know how to do this, but I am having a mental block.

My default text in Internet Explorer (7) has decided to become italic. How
do I set it back to normal?

[Awaits blindingly obvious answer]

Two possibilities:

1. When a rogue program decides to install its own version of system fonts,
it may replace the original version of the font file with a shortcut in the
font folder. Once this program is uninstalled, the shortcut may now point
to a font file that no longer exists. Windows XP in turn reacts by turning
all unspecified fonts into italics upon next reboot. The simple way to fix
this is to delete all shortcuts in the font folder and replace them with
the actual font file. By going to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Fonts], you
can also double check the path of each font and look for any suspicious
paths.

2. If Arial (and possibly other system fonts) will only show in italics
after installing XP SP3, it is because SP3 replaced them with a newer
version. Go into the /Windows/$NTServicePackUninstall$ folder to find the
older versions and replace them.

The former is the possibility then because SP3 has not been installed on
this PC. Will look tonight.

Thanks for the pointer. It turned out that the normal Arial font had been
deleted. I simply had to copy it back from my last backup which fixed it.
The only mystery now is how it got deleted in the first place. I haven't
installed or uninstalled anything since the backup was made.

Glad you got it sorted. Thanks for updating the thread.

Hello M.I.5 3/4,

Go to Tools - Internet Options. At the bottom where it says "Appearance",
click on "Fonts".

I will assume that your default font style is "Latin Based".

This is what my default settings were, and they stayed that way after
upgrading to SP3:

WebPages font: Verdana
Plain Text font: Lucida Sans Typewriter

I think these are the defaults for all English speaking versions of IE for
WebPages and documents that don't have a specified text font. Once you've
changed back to your preferred fonts or the default fonts, then click "Ok".
Then click on "Accessibility" and make sure all of the boxes are cleared
unless you checked some of them yourself.

I hope this helps, good luck.

Peace,
