friday when i did a restart, i got a dll error message the second before it shut off, then when i logged back on, i went to check what the error was exactly...then it shut off by itself...it got progressively faster to the point where i couldn't even get into the bios setup, or safe mode..it shuts off in less then 30 seconds...so i put in the quick restore CD's and it loaded to about 13% and shut off...so now i have no XP to work with...and now the few seconds it's on, it either says NO OS SYSTEM... or loading windows 98..!??! this machine came pre-installed with XP, and has never remotely had anything 98 on it...people i've spoken to said "run fdisk" which i can't cause it shuts off...or try to get MSDOS on it, which i'm not sure if it would stay on for that either...help! thanks

There was a virus that came out a little while back that would cause your computer to shutdown or reboot every 30 seconds. If you can get your virus definitions updated and boot to safe mode, run a full sweep. If it does not show up you might try a program like adaware or spybot. It could be a spyware program causing problems. I am thinking it is a virus. One thing you might try to get your system to bootup is instead of safe mode, select the "Last known good configuration." This might let you in long enough to do a sweep and kill and virus. I had this probelm a while back and I found the virus, but I had to go to Nortons website to download the program to kill the virus. the anti-virus would not kill this one but it would detect and give you the name of it. From here you might have to go to Nortons site and look for a program that can kill that particular virus.

well here's the thing...i can't keep it on for more than 30 seconds to do anything...and since i tried to quick restore, i don't have a working OS to even get into any safe mode...or anything else for that matter...it has to be some power management issue..i left it unplugged for two days, and when i first turned it on, it gave enough time to do a 30% quick restore...but still shut down...there's gotta be a way to get into it with MSDOS or something right?
