the rename codecs thing only half worked i did it so it would quit saying this progam has encountered a problem blah blah blah so now it quits when i import something

Well at least it cured one of your problems. How did you know Rename Codecs
would solve this?
Is there any error message when you get this other problem? If you are
importing MPeg's or MP3's neither of them work all that well in Movie
Maker. If you are using these files it might be worth converting them to
AVI and WAV's
