A friend dropped off a sony laptop with w2k and said it wouldn't update.
I cleaned it thoroughly and tried. It is 49 critical updates behind. It
downloads
them but install fails.

I give up.

Any ideas???

I get an error code in log of 0x80240020

Try

START
RUN
type
DCOMCNFG
click OK

When Component Services opens click on the Default Security Tab

Under Default Access Permissions click on Edit

Verify that Administrator is in the list, if the list is blank, add it if
necessary by clicking ADD then click on administrator and local
administrators and then click OK.

Install the latest installer. I got stuck this way and that's what
Microsoft told me to do and it worked fine. But expect a few problems
because the installer expects things to be left by other installers.
As I recall there was a program that the MS guy used to wipeout the bad
stuff prior to installing the latest (3.1 or so).

Hello Stubby,

If you still have problems, stop automatic update service, rename under c:\windows
the folder softwaredistribution to sdold or whatever, start automatic update
service and try again with windowsupdate.

Best regards
