It downloads new message without being clicked on

This is going to be hard to explain. (Outlook 2003)

When a new message comes in, it automatically downloads, shows the context,
and marks it "read". That way, I think messages are read a pass them up.
Not only that, but people walking by my computer can read messages I haven't
seen yet without touching my computer. A message should not show read (or
show contents) until the user actually clicks on it to read it. Until then,
contents should not show and the message should not show read. This is the
way OE handled it. More privacy and less confusion.

Please don't suggest to change the Preview Pane options because that is not
the answer to solve this problem. My In-box has to be defaulted to show the
message. The other option of not showing read until you click on another
message is not the answer either. How do I make it work like OE?

Thanks,
ELW

It is if you don't want the messages to show on your screen automatically.
That's the whole purpose of the Reading Pane and it's true for Outlook and
Outlook Express both.
My In-box has to be
defaulted to show the message.

Then unless you physically block the screen, how to you expect to prevent
people walking by from seeing your message?

It does work like OE. Perhaps the one difference is that you have the
message set to be marked as read after appearing in the Reading Pane for a
brief period. You can change that, or cancel marking it as read altogether,
with Tools>Optons>Other>Reading Pane. Uncheck the top box.

Hi Brian,

THanks for your reply, but you are incorrect. I've been using OE for 9
years and just switched over. Trust me... it's not the same.

For instance, if my inbox in totally empty in OE and one message comes in,
it won't show the contents of the message until you actually CLICK on it.
Even if the preview pane is off. BUT.. with Outlook, if a message comes in
to an empty In-box, it will show the contents and mark itself read in my 5
sec. default. (both OE and Outlook have the 5 sec. delay.

I saw someone else post about this a couple of weeks ago and now I can't
find the post.

Thanks

And I've been using both for much longer than that.

Outlook does show in the Reading Pane the text of the newest message when
you open Outlook, if you have it set to open in the Inbox, but it doesn't
advance to the next unread message when one comes in, as you seem to be
claiming. I have Outlook set to display Outlook Today when it starts, so
there is no Reading Pane until I switch to a mail folder.

Brian, it's not the same as OE and nothing I do will make it act the same.
As I said, another poster had the same frustration and no one was able to
help him either. I thought I would try again.

Thanks anyway.
