Hi my basic problem is I dont know enough .

I purchased a new Compac Presario SR502 with Windows Vista basic
preinstalled. This came complete with 512 Ram - which based on my previous
home PC , I thought would be a great system.

I have since added 512 Ram in the hope it would give me some improvement to
preformance - unsucessfully.

Have tried to install dual system and shrunk the c: drive to create a 17Gb
unnamed partition and inserted the full disk of windows XP home edition /sp2
that I own. This tells me it has a compatability with the current windows
operating system and will not install over vista.

Question at last:

How do I now install XP onto the unnamed partition that Vista has created by
shrinking

You need to install XP first, then install Vista to a separate drive. XP
cannot create a dual boot setup with Vista but Vista can create a dual boot
setup with XP. Hence, in order to do what you wish, XP must be installed
first, then run Vista setup.

Thanks Michael

That raises another problem for me - how do I uninstall a preinstalled
version of vista and then reinstall later - I was not given any disk for
vista with the pc

It's not clear from your post what's happening. What do you mean by "This
tells me it has a compatibility with the current windows operating system
and will not install over vista"?

Is this an upgrade version of XP?

You're computer maker is required to give you a means of restoring the
system. They must have a routine or possibly a restore partition. Did they
not give you information about creating a restore disk and/or restoring your
system to factory defaults? That said, from what you have stated thus far,
it sounds as though what you want to do may not be possible with this type
of setup, at least not without Vista compatible third party software that
would allow you to set up a dual boot scenario and it's own boot menu.

You might check out VistaBootPro:
http://www.vistabootpro.org/

I've only used it in a scenario wherein XP and Vista were both already
installed. Check the information at their website as well as in their
forums at the link above. Also, before doing anything, make sure you know
and understand your computer's recovery routine, how to put it back in the
condition it was in when you purchase it as well as to be able to work with
your setup without having been given a copy of Vista on a CD.
