When I install this game, i get an error saying that I need to verify that a
file exists and that I can access it. The file is c:\program files\ea
games\command and conquer generals\audioenglish.big. When I install the game,
and the error pops up, I click retry and it constantly comes up, so I keep
hitting retry all the way to 100% completion, then after 100%, it continues
to pop up as if it is still installing.
I assume all i have to do is do that it is saying, verify that the file
exists. If thats what I have to do, how do I do that?

Hi tator salad,

Uninstall the game and then try installing it again using compatibility mode...

Try installing and playing that using 95/98 Compatibility mode.

To install a program using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode, hold
down SHIFT as you insert the game CD, use My Computer to browse
to the setup program, and then skip down to step 1 in the list below:

To run an installed program using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode,
first right click the program and "Send To..." / Desktop (create shortcut).

1.. Right click on the shortcut to the program.
2.. Click on Properties.
3.. Click on the Compatibility tab.
4.. Click on Run this program in compatibility mode and select one of these:
a.. Windows 95
b.. Windows 98
c.. Windows NT 4
d.. Windows 2000
5.. Under Display settings, check mark the mode that you think that is best:
a.. Run in 256 colors.
b.. Run in 640 X 480 screen resolution.
c.. Disable visual themes.

Click on Apply.Click on Ok.Double click on the program.

Of course, let's not forget to check for any patches or updates for that game.
A good place to find them is: www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a

If you'd like to learn more information about compatibility mode, you can click the

It sounds like a defective file. To make sure try to copy the whole disk
to your hard drive:
1. create a separate folder on C: and name it Install (path C:\Install)
2. click Start/Run
3. enter the following command assuming your cd drive is E: (use
copy/paste): xcopy e:\*.* /s c:\install

After I do this, the ms-dos comes up and starts adding files into that folder
thats on the cd. Not all the files go into the cd though, its that normal?
also, after this is done, what next? Will the game work?

Anyway, just want to say that this is very strange. I bought this game a
year ago and when i installed it, it was perfect. The problem was that it was
very slow, too slow, so a few months ago to save room i uninstalled it. Since
then, I did some cleaning up with my computer and freed up some space, and i
thougth maybe the game would be a little faster, well, I tried to install and
I get this mess with that file. Very screwy my computer is.

I just had an idea, if i buy the game again, and i really have no problem
with that (unless it does not work also), would I probably not have to worry
about that defective file? Or is it the computer thats defecting it?

Also, sorry, jimmy and thomas, both of those techniques do not work.

The MS-DOS will come up and show you all the files that are being
copied. The copies on your hard drive should be the same as on the CD.
If you are getting an error message it is most probably a sign that a
file is corrupt.

After the copying succeeds, you need to install it in compatibility
mode. (see Jimmy's instructions) and I would suggest to use the Windows
98 mode. The file to change to the mode will be either setup or autorun
in the C:\Install folder
When the installation works, you need to change the executable file to
compatibility mode too. Change the file to the 98 mode that your short
cut on the desktop refers to (right click the shortcut, click
properties, click find target).

Before buying a replacement you might want to try to install the game on
a friends computer. The defect, if any, should not be on your computer
but on the CD, so you won't have to worry
Also, sorry, jimmy and thomas, both of those techniques do not work.

Hello, to elaborate a bit more on Thomas' advice..... I'd recommend copying
the entire set of discs onto a folder on your hard drive.

To do this....

First create a folder on your desktop for example, right click an empty area
and go to New -> Folder call it setup for now.

Put the first Generals disc into the drive, and go to My Computer, right
click on the CD drive icon and select explore. This will show all the files
and folders on the CD. Select them all and copy and paste them into the
'setup' folder on your desktop. Repeat the procedure again for disc 2,
overwriting any existing files in setup.

Once that's done, run the setup program directly from the 'setup' folder on
your desktop. If it installs ok, you can delete the setup folder as it will
take up a bit of space.

If there's anything you don't understand just post back and maybe I'll do up
a video on how to do it for you. 8-)

Hi tator salad,

It's true that sometimes we get so keen to check the engine
and see that we forget to check the gas tank first. ;-)
