Reinstalling Windows XP Home Edition:
My OS seemed to crash. I wiped my hard drive clean by
writing zeros. Now I have been trying to reinstall Windows
XP, only to have the same error come up repeatedly in
different forms. Each time I go through the Windows setup,
as the setup process is copying files to an installation
folder--a file will come up which it says, "setup cannot
copy the file" or "the file **** was not copied correctly"
A different file each time--first was dfs.hlp, then
devenum.dll, then something else. It gives me the option
to skip the file, but that setup would not be fully
completed, or perhaps in error.

More detail:

I have tried varying CD ROMs, two separate copies of the
XP disc, I have checked the hard drive for
errors...everything checks out. What is wrong!?

Sounds like a disk error. Since you (unnecessarily) wiped out your OS,
you'll have to borrow a computer and download your hard disk vendor disk
check utility. You want the one that you can create a bootable floppy
with. Run that floppy test to discover what condition your hard disk is
in. If you have a bad sector, the XP installer won't be able to fix
that. If you had left XP intact, it would have been able to fix that,
but you can use the disk check utility to mark that sector bad and then
try to reinstall XP. If there is more than one bad sector, I would trash
the disk and buy a new one.
