Issues with broadband connection

I have an odd problem. I have broadband cable that was
working fine. I then had something change or corrupt on my
machine. Now I can still ping from a dos prompt to sites
but if I bring up IE and try to connect to a web page I get
nowhere. In addition, anything that tries to connect to
the ISP like a time sync utility fails immediately. I have
completely removed the modem, device drivers, network
setting and reinstalled - same results.

Any ideas?

Perhaps the Windows Personal Firewall is running. It may be possible that if
the Automatic Updates is running that some update may have activated it.

Any info on how I would check for that and/or turn it off?

I am having the exact same problem on two different PC's -
one is a fresh 2000 install w/ SP4 and the other is running
in VM Ware. The VM was fine until I installed SP4.

As this message states, I too can ping via IP but DNS does
not work and I can't connect to anything outside of my
internal network.

I'll try the firewall suggestion (but that is for XP???) -
did that work?

Phillip,

Thx but I'm running W2k not XP. Do you think this could be
an issue with W2k as well?

Well, it is the microsoft.public.win2000.networking
newsgroup... (???)

So no other solutions to this problem? Just another
'feature' requiring a re-install?

Try entering 207.46.245.222 in your IE address bar. If it brings up
Microsoft.com then you have a dns issue. If it does not work you have another
problem. Try running netdiag to see if it reports any failed tests. Netdiag is
located on the install disk under the support/tools folder where you will need
to run the setup program there. It would also be worthwhile to boot into
safemode with networking to see if the problem goes away and if it does you have
a conflict with a startup program/service/driver which you can troubleshoot via
selective startup with msconfig. Msconfig is not included in W2K, but you can
copy it from an XP box or search the internet for "msconfig download" . If none
of that pans out the KB link below of repairing winsock would be worth a try.
Don't rule out that you may simply need a new nic. -- Steve

I am active in 5 different groups at the same time and it a chore to always
know at every moment exactly which one you are in. Besides, not everyone
posts messages that are precisely "on topic". When you don't see them
mention thier OS version you can't simply assume it is exactly what the
Group is supposed to be about. I've even seen Linux questions in here
before.
