Hi

I am having a weird problem in the last couple of weeks. I have an XP
machine at work and an XP machine at home both with SP2. I use remote
desktop connection across my company VPN to access my work XP machine.
Recently however, (I cannot tie down the day nor the event), when I
access my work XP machine, I don't get any further than the login
screen. The login times out. On the work machine the screen goes
black with a blinking cursor. It will remain in this state and I
cannot recover from it, even though the machine is up and running, I
cannot get control and end up rebooting it. I notice from examining
the running processes on the machine, winlogon is running twice so it
never actually gets any further than that.

I have connected from a number of other PC's in the office but get the
same result. I have PC Anywhere, PC DUO, and Citrix also installed.
With each install, I needed to alter the registry to ensure that
msgina.dll continued to be used. It has worked with all installed but
I have uninstalled them in case, but with no success.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
Can anyone tell me how I can reinstall the terminal server component
that is embedded in XP?

Thanks in advance
Eamonn...

This has been reported by others in the past... Some people reported
that updating their video driver helped, and others have reported that
they needed to re-apply the service pack.

You can run "sfc /scannow" to make sure that your TS (and other
system) files aren't corrupt.

Hi Jeffrey

I had already reapplied the SP2. I have just reinstalled the video
drivers and again reapplied SP2, but the result is the same. I had
spent some considerable time searching for a possible solution on
usenet and the web before posting this message cry fo help, but could
only find people reporting the problem but could not find a solution.

I am at a loss at this stage as to what the problem could be. I have
run SFC before and after reappling SP2 and the video drivers.

Kind regards
Eamonn...

You should update the video drivers AFTER applying SP2, not before. It is
SP2 that installs the bad video driver with nVidia cards.

Hi Robin

I have done that too. I checked it after reinstalling the drivers but
before SP2 and after SP2, with the same result on each occasion. The
video card is an ATI FireGL2.

I have just updated the display driver with an older version of the
drivers. The blinking cursor has disappeared, but I still lose video
and the connection still times out.

Kind regards
Eamonn...
