From <ges /remove/ @cox.net.
I have Win 2K, Eudora 5.1, Netscape 4.7 at work and it is
wonderful. Never crashes. Surf and e-mail all the time.
A month ago I got a new machine with Win XP Professional,
Eudora 6.1.1.1, and Firefox and the latest Netscape. It is
a disaster. My system freezes two to three times a day
when using Eudora or browsers. Mouse to upper left and
upper right (close) have no effect. Right click on
application on lower task bar has no effect. Worse, Task
Manager will not stop anything. Nothing. It acts like it
is impotent. My Task manager at work (Win 2k) works 100
percent of the time. My Task Manager at home has NEVER
worked. And I can't even use the Start, Shutdown option.
How did XP Professional get so impotent. Why did XP give
up my control to this computer, and does anyone know what I
can do about it?
Many thanks,
Frustrated, George
P.S. I load and unload programs. I am not a programmer.

The problem is not with Windows XP itself.

Suspect hardware drivers and/or application software.

Try uninstalling Eudora temporarily, for example, and see if that
makes a difference. I haven't used Eudora since about version 3 so I
don't have any idea about how stable their more recent versions have
been.

Is this new machine at your home? Do you have a firewall in place?
You almost certainly have one at work and in today's environment you
need one at home.

How up to date is your antivirus? Make sure the virus definitions are
not more than a week old and do a complete virus scan of your
computer. Note that Norton 2004 products have been problematic for
many users, and often an alternative product is advisable.

Spyware is endemic these days. Do a quick online check for spyware at
http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm and then see
http://www.aumha.org/a/parasite.htm for information and downloads to
clean up any spyware and/or to prevent future infestatations.

Good luck
