Is Windows Defender working?

I never see Windows Defender(WD) do anything other than telling me there are
updates to be downloaded. I seem to detect Spyware with Spybot and AVG
Anti-spyware programs, but WD never records or does anything that I am aware
of. How does WD block spyware and it it does, why doesn't it say or do
something?

As far as malware software goes windows defender is not very good.Also this
months patches their is a hotfix for windows defender and one care to plug a
hole in which an attacker could gain control of your computer.
You are running avg anti-spyware this program is far superior than windows
defender.

Note: Ad-AwareSE is also a good program,this spring there will also be a
newer version with a better scanning engine.
