The Beta 1 had a sub tray icon this one Beta 2 doesn't.....Is it suppose to
I can start it manual but then it doesn't minimize to the sub tray will just
minimize to the taskbar or shutdown....Not sure what it is suppose to
do...Ran it with default install.

Yes, that is by design. The icon will only appear if there is action
required from the user.

Yes I agree, it should but does not seem to. The castellated wall icon only
seems to appear when WD has an update for you - just like the Windows Update
Notification. I personally do not like this as it is so much more reassuring
to see the icon present in the system tray. At least this way you can be
reasonabley sure you have the benefits of Real Time Protection which should
then have the options to Enable/Disable/Update from there by right clicking.
On my system the icon doesn`t even appear in the list of Customize
Notifications - Task Bar>Properties>Hide Inactive Icons>Customize. Like you
say it should at least minimize to the system tray, not task bar. If it is to
be like this, then it should appear in the Security Centre where you can
monitor from there. Disappointing.

I have only seen it when updating so far. It looks like a castle with a red checkmark when updating. When finished updating the
checkmark changes to green and then the icon disappears. have not got an alert yet so can't say if it uses the same method. It
appears the icon disappearing is by design but I still prefer it quick actions.

Thank you don't like the design...rather have the icon for quick changes if
needed.....I hate it when MS takes out the users controls to their
computers....
Robbie

Yep not sure I like this design...Seem MS is always doing something to
remove our control of things....

Forgot to say XP SP2 professional. I hate that there isn't an icon in the
sub tray.....
Robbie

Not to shut it down as I have to when I render in Poser and other
programs......The right click on the sub tray icon and shut it down was
easy...now I have to CAD and find the services to end them....or do it in
services in Control Panel.....these are things that have to be done
sometimes....

Hi Robbie,

We removed the systray icon when Windows Defender doesn't have anything for
the user to do to clean up the systray - there's a huge push in Vista to make
the systray useful again.

However, we're looking at adding a setting so you can have the systray icon
all the time if you want, but the default will be the behavior you see now.

Thanks for the feedback!

Joe

My mistake you can edit the program from Windows Defender by going to help
Exit Windows defender.
Robbie

Thank you Joe....and your welcome....

Hi Joe

If any malware disable Windows Defender in which way
will a user be notified ?

Or directly, when will Defendern be within Security center
as with Vista ?

This is a "black hole" now until it will be supervised from
Securitycenter.

Have XP SP2 Home Edition/downloaded Beta2 and installed per instructions then downloaded new signatures (I thought). Saw no icon in sys tray/notification area. Uninstalled Beta 2 and removed all traces of folders/files of Beta 1/installed Beta 2 again and ran program fix from Add/remove programs/now cannot update signatures 1.0.0.0/however icon now is displayed at all times in the system tray (which is good I hope)/I assume we no longer have the feature to remove users tracks??/

If Windows Defender is installed correctly and fully updated, you
should NOT see its icon in the systray.

Hi Plun,

You mean "when" malware disables WD, right? It's bound to happen,
eventually. You're absolutely right, we do need Security Center watching
our back, which is already in the Vista builds.

We won't do this on XP, though there are other ways we're exploring.

Thanks for the feedback!

Hi

Yes , it´s absolutely necessary to have
a Security center supervision. (as in Vista)

But maybe MS wants this also to be a Vista go over
benefit.........;)

Or that One Care protects from everything.... ;)

http://spaces.msn.com/windowsonecare/

""So, let me say it again to be clear: if malware gets on to the
system, whether it is signed or not, the Windows OneCare antivirus or
anti-spyware solution should protect users from that exploit. The
reason is, our virus and spyware signatures (policies containing
“lists†of malware/spyware/adware) are not based on whether or not an
application is signed. Rather, we make a separate determination
regarding applications suspected of being either malicious, or falling
into the category of spyware. (For more information, see:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/isv/analysis.mspx)""

You are funny inside MS ;)

Of course the bad guys will try to disable Windows Defender........

Don't think "removal of control" think "simplicity"--lack of clutter--one
less icon to think about--it just works.

The app has all the controls it has--and you can get to them, via start,
programs, Windows Defender--we need less clutter in the notification area.
We need stuff that is actually a notification of action needed--not a
continuing advertisement that you've spent your money well on so-and-so's
anti-whatever..

(If that sounds like I've bought the party line, I have!)

Hi Plun

Agreed! XP users should have the reassurance of knowing if the bad guys
have disabled by having a monitoring capability as suggested in my thread
above thru the Security Centre. This is truly a bolt on product for XP users.
While I appreciate MS enthusiasm to market a new OS. If they are serious
about the ASW business there should be no compromises where security is
concerned. For the average person XP will be used by millions for many a year
yet before they decide they need a new comp to run Vista. Asta La Vista baby
!!
